Thru the Sniper...Art

This my new and fascinating blog about a Sniper, who is a military/paramilitary marksman, engages targets from positions of concealment or at distances exceeding the target's detection capabilities. Snipers generally have specialized training and are equipped with high-precision rifles and high-magnification optics, and often also serve as scouts/observers feeding tactical information back to their units or command headquarters.

Marksmanship And  Etymology:-

1701–1800. Early forms of sniping or marksmanship were used during the American Revolutionary War. For instance, in 1777 at the battle of Saratoga the Colonists hid in the trees and used early model rifles to shoot British officers.

The name "sniper" comes from the verb "to snipe", which originated in the 1770s among soldiers in British India in reference to shooting snipes, a wader that was considered an extremely challenging game bird for hunters due to its alertness, camouflaging color and erratic flight behavior. Snipe hunters therefore needed to be stealthy in addition to being good trackers and marksmen. In the 18th century, letters sent home by English officers in India referred to a day's rough shooting as "going sniping", as it took a skilled flintlock sportsman a lot of patience and endurance to wing-shoot a snipe in flight. Accomplishing such as shot was regarded as exceptional, and inevitably during the late 18th century, the term "snipe shooting" was simplified to "sniping". This evolved to the agent noun "sniper", first appearing by the 1820s. The term "sniper" was first attested militarily in 1824, becoming common place in the First World War.

The Record-Breaking Longest Confirmed Sniper Kill..........

Reports regarding the longest recorded sniper kills that contain information regarding the shooting distance and the identity of the sniper have been presented to the general public since 1967. Snipers in modern warfare have had a substantial history following the development of long distance weaponry. As weapons, ammunition, and aids to determine ballistic solutions improved, so too did the distance from which a kill could be targeted. In mid-2017 it was reported that an unnamed Canadian special forces operator, based in Iraq, had set a new record of 3,540 m (3,871 yd), beating the record previously held by an Australian sniper (also unnamed) at 2,815 m (3,079 yd).

Reconnaissance Abilities:-

Snipers are known for their specialization in shooting targets from long-range distances with a modified weapon, as well as their reconnaissance abilities. Vidrio, who served as the Sniper SMEE team lead, has more than 20 years' experience with various weapons systems through his civilian and military occupations.

Landing a shot at this distance requires not only intimate knowledge of how your weapon handles, but a rifle capable of reliably performing at that level. So the accuracy and reliability of the weapon needs some kind of appreciation thought the quotes that i am going to write now..

“The Sniper must not be susceptible to emotions such as anxiety and remorse,” --Craig Roberts,-- Cross hairs on the Kill Zone: American Combat Snipers, Vietnam through Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"A sniper is like a genius - it’s not enough to be one, you have to be one at something.",-- Steve Aylett--
"One man can change the world with a bullet in the right place".--Malcolm McDowell--

"You are never freer than in that moment when you decide to expose yourself to sniper fire."-- James Nachtwey-

"Every person I killed I strongly believe that they were bad. When I do go face God there is going to be lots of things I will have to account for but killing any of those people is not one of them."--Chris Kyle-

Sniper Competition in Germany (Aug 2021):-

Three U.S. military sniper teams joined soldiers from 13 other countries in Germany in the month of August 2021, to show off their shooting skills, learn new techniques and vie for the title of best sniper team.

The European Best Sniper Team Competition, hosted by U.S. Army Europe and Africa and the 7th Army Training Command, challenges snipers’ mental and physical abilities. It is not just a shooting competition; snipers have to demonstrate other critical battlefield skills, including stealth, reconnaissance, fitness and the ability to adjust under pressure.

“The amount of skill-sets we learn experiencing these events are quite useful for how we shape training in the future,” said Spc. Matthew Meckley, from 3rd Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, a Washington National Guard unit that traveled to Hohenfels, Germany, for the 10-day event.

Twenty-seven teams from 14 countries participated in the 10-day competition, which kicked off Aug. 5, said Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Sanchez, the match president of the competition. The two U.S. Army teams that competed alongside the Washington National Guard unit were from the Vicenza, Italy-based 173rd Airborne Brigade and the Vilseck, Germany-based 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

Sanchez said planning for the event started in October 2020 and continued until three weeks before it began. The 2020 competition was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Cpl. Chris Hawley, another competitor with Washington-based 3rd Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, said he has always wanted to test his shooting skills in a Best Sniper Competition.

“The most challenging part has been the level of difficulty in applying [sniper] skills,” Hawley said. “Sniper skills on a flat, static range becomes harder when you are doing it in less-than-ideal conditions, different positions, things like that.”

The Art of Sniping:-

The Art of Sniping is more than just proper cover, concealment and sight alignment; it demands vigilant situational awareness, flawless timing and solid arithmetic skills.
